AUKLET 2012 trip-- April 20 to November 17
All along this trip, people kept asking me when I was going to write the book… I think this is it! This ramble went on for just three days short of seven months, and there are a lot of photos here. The short version can be seen by clicking http://smu.gs/YMk58O But in this series of pages in front of you, you have the whole story. Personally, I think that it's far too many pictures to look at in one go – I would humbly suggest approaching the collection as a book, to either be skipped through, or looked at in sections. It can best be viewed by selecting photos individually, which makes it easier to read the captions, which you'll find below the larger version of the photo that appears on the right.
The "contents" of this book are arranged almost entirely chronologically. It begins in the Connecticut River, going out the river and west to Madison, Connecticut, then east, back past the river to Fishers Island and Narragansett Bay, and to Cuttyhunk Island, across from Martha's Vineyard. From there it's through the Cape Cod Canal and over to Wellfleet, on Cape Cod Bay, and then back past the canal entrance and up to Plymouth. From Plymouth, AUKLET and I sailed north to Rockport, MA (in one go!) and up the coast to Maine, including around and about in Penobscot Bay, and around Deer Isle to Swan's Island. After a couple of months sailing in Maine, it was back again to NH, Mass, RI, and Connecticut, passing through quite a few different harbors. I hope you enjoy the photos! About the boat:
AUKLET is a glasshouse Chebacco, built by New England Shipyard from plans by Phil Bolger and Friends. The design is included in Phil Bolger's book Boats with an Open Mind. LOA: 20'6" Beam: 7'6" Draft: 18" The mainsail on AUKLET is not the original design, which was a 149 sq ft. gaff rig main. This was replaced with a 99 sq ft. roller reefing lug, designed by Matt Layden for his Paradox microcruiser. The 27 sq ft. mizzen is the original Bolger design. Closer to the original overall sail area would be nice, but the short mast and easy reefing are a significant plus for my purposes. Auxiliary power comes from a Torqeedo 1003 electric outboard, used sparingly. A yuloh (curved Chinese sculling oar) is under construction for 2013.
